History

           The Academy of Ryukyu Kempo^™ (琉拳館) was established in 1975 in Independence, Missouri by D’veed Natan (徳維 納 騰). The name is a direct translation of “Ryukenkan” (琉拳館), the Dojo name given to D’veed Natan by (Taika)(大家) Seiyu Oyata. The Academy was located at 212 N. Main. The beginning was difficult; but after a year the school was able to move onto 23^rd street, one of the busiest streets in Independence. Location was great. Parking was a nightmare. At the expiration of the years lease, with the help of one of the students, the Academy of Ryukyu Kempo relocated to its final address at 911 W. 23^rd street. The single building construction, surrounded by a massive parking lot was ideal and the Dojo remained until D'veed closed it and then moved overseas to Israel in 1987. Unbeknownst to Natan, Hanshi, one of Shihan Gerald Wicklund's, students (whom Natan, Sensei had never met), without permission, took his trademark the Academy of Ryukyu Kempo^™ and started using it as his own. With the rise of the internet, this fraud was discovered and efforts were made to correct it. The perpetrator is incorrigible and this wrong has yet to be righted. Fortunately, Hanshi Natan had learned in the interim that Kempo (拳法) was more correctly transliterated Kenpo (拳 法) and the better transliteration has been used since. Now, the Academy of Ryukyu Kenpo^™ (琉拳館) is well established in Israel's capitol city, Jerusalem. D'veed is the premier Kobujutsu instructor in Israel teaching both kata and combat techniques with the traditional weapons as well as improvised and modern weapons. His knowledge of kata breakdown and practical application is unsurpassed in Israel; elevating it from "kindergarten" to "university" and post doc levels. Based on his extensive military background in both the US Army and the Israeli Army he has designed a program of Krav Maga Tsavi'i for use by armed and armored combat soldiers for those situations in which normal weapons are not available in time, or appropriate for use.
          Over the last 22 + years, the Academy has moved from location to location in and around Jerusalem. It is now located in the Jerusalem Sports Center, near downtown Jerusalem. At #32 HaTsfira, the Academy is in the German Colony (Moshava HaGermanit) near the junction of Emek HaRefaim and Rachael Imenu. This section is here to forewarn prospective new students and their parents about several uncomfortable facts involved with the study of Ryukyu Kenpo Kobujutsu. Ryukyu Kenpo training is expensive. In addition to the cost of lessons, a new student should be aware that he must: buy a uniform – ₪ 340, pay the Association fee – ₪ 125, and other incidental expenses during the course of his training. If you cannot afford or justify these expenditures, Ryukyu Kenpo training is not for you.
            Reality doesn’t live up to the fantasy. Few students anticipate the intensity of the effort and commitment. Realize that proficiency is not easily attained; and those who promise otherwise are lying. Ryukyu Kenpo Kobujutsu skills are no more quickly attained than playing a musical instrument or any other physical skill. There is a vast amount of knowledge for both: mind and body to absorb, requiring time, patience, and endurance. If you are not willing to put in the time and effort required, Ryukyu Kenpo training is not for you.
            Ryukyu Kenpo training emphasizes tradition. We train for health and well being, in addition to self defense. We train for self improvement. We train by traditional methods. If you have trouble with any of this, Ryukyu Kenpo training is definitely not for you.
Boys: ages 8 to 12
Men: ages 13 and up.
          Private, semi-private, and closed group classes are available upon request.

Note:

All students are expected to have purchased their school uniform and paid their Membership Fees within 30 days of signing up for regular lessons.
            Uniforms must be clean and free from odor. T-shirts and belts must be worn with the uniforms at all classes and school functions.
            Students must be clean with washed hair, trimmed fingernails, and odor free. This should be a given and no further comment is needed.
            For the purpose of safety, students are expected to wear authorized footwear, only for use in the Dojo, clean and in good repair, with socks. No sandals, leather shoes, or boots will be allowed. No bare or sock covered feet, either. Cups and supporters are mandatory wear for all classes; group and private.
            The Pledge of Honor is to be memorized; and the student is required to be able to recite it on demand.
            Do not Show or demonstrate anything to anyone who “wish to see something” unless specifically requested to do so by an Instructor
